The Nunatak Raku

The Nunatak Raku is one of those ultralighters concepts that just hasn't caught on yet. But if you think about it, why do you carry a insulating jacket, and then a separate sleeping bag? Well, personally, I wear my jacket in my sleeping most of the time, but it would make sense to just have one insulating piece of gear, for reduction of bulk and weight. The concept doesn't come cheap though, starting at $574, weighing in at 2lbs 1oz. Steve over at Suluk had one custom built to keep him warm down to 0 degrees.

  1. I like this idea, however it seems like it would be much cheeper to just get a really nice jacket? Like the out of the box thinking though.

  2. Good point, David. I think that you could probably reproduce the insulative value with a warm jacket and warm pants, however, I think there's something to be said for the style of a sleeping bag, allowing for your entire body to share the same insulated tube.

But yes, it's simply for out of the box thinking, I personally won't be spending $600 on a jacket/bag combo anytime soon. Wouldn't be against making one, though ;).

  3. Oh that's real smart. Get your jacket wet and you'll also get your bag wet - in the extreme cold.

  4. @Anonymous, if you're worried, they sell it with an Epic shell for extra water (and snow) resistance.
